The Newark Women
On June 14, four young African American Newark women were convicted by an all-white jury and sentenced to long prison terms (3 1/2 to 11 years) — reportedly for defending themselves against a homophobic male attacker in Greenwich Village. Some nearby men reportedly intervened, and the attacker stated several times that he was hurt by a man. Nevertheless the four women were convicted. Themes of the prosecution seem to have included a notion that the Newark women had no business being in Manhattan at all.
I haven’t followed this case closely. Here’s a post at The Primary Contradiction, with details and specific calls for action. Please check it out.
